ATKINS, Joel C.
ATKINS, Joel C. Seeking the parents of Joel C.
Atkins, born July 3, 1805, in Virginia. Joel married Mary Austin sometime
before 1825. Mary was born in Greenville, South Carolina. It is believed
that they might have been married in DeKalb County, Georgia, in that Mary's
parents lived there from the time they migrated to Georgia until their death.
In 1842 the second DeKalb County courthouse burned, destroying all records
except the Inferior Court Minutes (1823-1859) and one book of the Superior
Court Minutes (1836-1843). The courthouse burned again in 1898. These fires
most probably resulted in the lost of Joel and Mary's marriage license. Joel
died August 11, 1876, in Fish Creek, Polk County, Georgia.
