Georgia Adopt A County
Thank you for your interest in adopting a Georgia county for the American History and Genealogy Project (AHGP) and maintaining a web site for the county. There are only a few "guidelines" and they can be found at http://ahgp.org/about.htm. The additional requirments for a Georgia county is to prominently display a GA AHGP Logo on your main page with a link back to the Georgia State page at http://www.gaahgp.genealogyvillage.com/ (Logos and some helpful information can be found at http://ahgp.org/logos.htm) It is also suggested that you join the AHGP mailing list so you can keep up with what is happening with the project, get in on discussions involving the project, get help or questions answered and in turn maybe answer a few. To join send an email with the word "subscribe" in the subject and the body of the email, nothing else, to [email protected].
If you have a list of links to other genealogy websites on your main page we suggest making a separate page for them and linking to them.
Some of the counties already have web sites and the account will only need to be transfered. They are: BUTTS, ELBERT, FLOYD, and HEARD. For the other counties, you will need to get your own web space.
Frequently Asked Questions What are my responsibilities as a County host?"
1. Providing raw data on a specific County. Any information you want to provide: Census, Cemeteries, Marriages, Deaths, Histories, Biographies, City Directories, Photographs, etc. We hope to eventually have complete data for each County, but by beginning with the documents you already have it's a great start. Every little bit helps someone!
"What if I don't know how to build a webpage?"
If you are interested in learning there are many help pages and simple html editors available online. If you would like to be a county coordinator but do not want to learn to do the coding to make the webpage just gather the data and send it to the state coordinator who will put it online for you.
"Can I adopt a Town or Township instead of a County?"
Yes! If covering an entire County is difficult for you because of time and resources, adopting a town, township, city, or community in that County is a great idea. We're happy to have volunteers at a County level. We would be happy to have volunteers who prefer to cover a topic in a township too, such as religion, history, cemeteries, occupations, etc. We can easily link your page to the County it falls under. Many researchers have a great knowledge of the specific area their ancestors lived in. This is a wonderful way to help. Just email us and let us know what area you would be interested in covering and we'll get you added.
"I am unable to adopt a County. Are there other ways I can help?"
Yes!! If you would like to volunteer to do any of the following, we'd love to have you on our team. By submitting the data you have collected in your research, or placing it online for linking, you can be a huge help to others who may be researching the same families or the same areas. You can submit information to the State host or your County host.
Suggestions? If you have an idea for something about a county you would like to see included, be it stories about your family, businesses of days gone by, famous people or history articles about places in the county or the people who lived here... please let us include it in this site.
Obituary Collector? If you collect obituaries or have access to obituaries and would like to transcribe and share them with visitors to this website, we would be happy to include them. Remember that unless you have permission from the newspaper to use the complete obituary you must only extract the facts for posting in order to observe the copyright laws.
Collect Maps? - Send your Maps If you collect old Georgia or County Plat Maps, please feel free to send them. We will post them online!!!
Photographer? - Send your Photographs for posting. If you have any old Georgia Photographs, please contribute them to this site. Photos of burial markers are very much welcomed.
Cemetery Buff? - Transcribe Cemetery Records for posting. If you live in Georgia and are willing to record the tombstone inscriptions in any of the counties cemeteries, please let us know, we will add them to the site.
Access to old Church Records? - Transcribe Church Records & send them for posting. If you have access to and are willing to type pages from church records... please allow us to add them to the site.
History Transcribers If you have access to books about Georgia history and are willing to type pages from them... let us know, we would love to add them to this site.
"Where do I place my pages? Does it cost me anything?"
You are free to place your pages anywhere you want them. Free space has generously been provided by GenealogyVillage.com for any page related to AHGP.
"Who owns this data?"
If you provide it, you own it. If you request it to be removed, it will be. We hope, however, that you would never feel a need to remove material. Our only goal here is to provide free information needed to do research from home.
